What Not To Do

WHAT TO DO WHEN TRIGGERED

I have found that the best thing to do is figure out what the past trauma was as soon as possible and get it resolved (neutralizing the emotional charge attached to it).

De-escalating the intensity of my triggered reaction first by regulating my nervous system (Regulate to De-Escalate) helps me regain some access to my cortex, making it easier to look at and neutralize the past trauma.

  1. De-Escalate the Triggered Reaction

    • Change Location

    • Safety Cues

    • Other De-Escalation Techniques (if needed)

  2. Neutralize the Past Trauma

    • Using one or more Neutralizing Techniques (to uncover and resolve the past trauma)
